we had a hour so took a trip downtown to see what this place the Arts District is all about in what was a vast orchard of citrus groves, once upon a time.
and now? lots of artists, the smell of oil paint (we made that up, but perhaps we Did sense the Industry upstairs in the lofty eaves just behind the slightly open doors from ironwork balconies festooned with lavender plants and brushes drying in the sunlight), Many british accents (all creative directors have one – or acquire one – together with the traditional precision frameless glasses and a modicum of interesting face hair shaping) and the roasting of coffee beans.
the coolest place?
The Artform Studio – a melange of vinyl, gentle sunlight creeping through the glass doors and a hair salon out back and a deep feeling of true soul (musically and the other one that’s all about being authentic and True).
and we also liked peeking into the Little Tokyo Mall because there was an entire boutique of Hello Kitty (a symphony of PINK) and a suspiciously-packed-arcade (for a Friday afternoon) with teenagers – sadly the Time Crisis machines were all taken, or we would have slipped inside and looked Rather incongruous in a white linen shirt, Jackie O sunglasses and shiny-shiny-black-patent-leather-Doctor.Martens.
maybe there were Lots of people dressed like us in the back playing those racing car machines (we like those too).
there are times when one needs to just let it out.
fractured soul engendered by the pointless monotony of requirements of modern-day-corporate-existence
we choose time crisis.
everyone needs a release.
vaguely harmless plastic weapons used to shoot at a vivid neon-like machine seem to work.
and playing arcade games is fun.
even a Tiny Bit hypnotic and rather relaxing after the adrenaline rush of pretending to be an armed government operative dropped into a foreign country to save the world (we’re making that bit up……there’s a Very Flimsy back story to time crisis, so we needed some richer narrative).
however there are darker ways to cover the pain of living in a world that can be cold, at times, and brutal, at others.
we saw Shame last night.
we hesitate to recommend it as its visual starkness and painful piercing of reality through addiction has been seared into our brain.
but it was incredible.
we’re going to stick to arcade games.
but we know the dark side.
but we’re not going there today.
and please stay in the light today yourself…….we like you over here.
you know SOME people like to relax with a G&T.
not team gloria.
we hit the arcade, baby, and bust out the time crisis choice-of-weapons-and-let-rip.
blows top of red plastic gun
we feel so much better
LOVE half-day summer fridays in the sniper fire of midtown manhattan.
f*ck the Hamptons*, darling.
