a philosophy of life by diego (or diego and his audition tape for @Bruce_Weber)

so Diego called us (of course, we speak “dog”, darlings, we grew up in England) and said:

“Richard just showed me ‘A Letter To True’ made by that nice photographer who wears the bandana”

Bruce Weber?”

“That’s the one.”

“Did you enjoy it?”

“Very much – in fact I’d like you to shoot an audition tape for me so I can be in his next movie.”

“Oh, absolutely – delighted to do so.”

“One more thing…..”

“Yes, Diego?”

“He shoots a lot in black and white and it’s kinda arty and has a strong message, can you do that?”

*lookstocamera*

“Oh, yes. With your looks and our talent, we can do an excellent audition tape for Mr. Weber, darling Diego.”

“great – Richard and I will see you on Sunday – we’ll put the coffee on.”

beautiful.

so here’s what we did….

after the shoot we let diego look through the Rushes and he turned to us and said, with a small almost winsome smile –

“I like it.”

Relief.

blonde curls, bubbles and rose petals.

darlings

a sweet little photographic shoot this morning with kate & millie

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

– lots of smiling and blowing bubbles OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and tossing-curls and giggling.  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and winsomely examining roses-in-bloomOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and having a soft, quiet moment together.

isn’t life delicious?

you know we *did* take our motion-camera there too.

*smiling*

you would?

most kind!

doesn’t it feel all 1930s with floppy straw hats and sunbeams-on-eyelashes and cake-for-tea?

we thought so.

downtown, to see the gardens.

darlings

a truly lovely day.

we went to the Natural History Museum (yes, Vast Dinosaurs) to see the New Nature Gardens with our friend Richard Hayden, who is the Head Gardener (which made us feel Very Nancy Mitford touring a Friend’s Country Estate in the most delicious way).

wandering around a garden, with a notebook (we are Writing An Article which will appear in the next week or so, we’ll let you know, of course), one finds oneself saying splendid things like:

oh! that’s gorgeous – and look! a hummingbird!

which is the sort of dialogue that Fridays benefit from most.

*shysmiletocamera*

why yes, we did make a short movie…………

*eyesdowncastshyly*

you would?

bless you for saying that.

and after the Gardens we had Something To Do Downtown (further downtown than the Museum you see) and *coughs* yes, we took a few Pictures there too.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The Bradbury Building (as seen in the glorious Blade Runner)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

the Grand Central Market (as seen in City Of Angels – the bit where Maggie tries to describe what a pear tastes like to Seth – the American re-working of the original Wings Of Desire from Berlin)OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

chinese food in los angeles is like no other chinese food on earth – not saying it’s necessarily good but it’s completely sui generis for reasons we cannot put our finger(s) on. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

artisanal coffee makers are creeping into the market (they’re very good so we don’t mind a Bit). OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and the backs of buildings remind us of Manhattan – after the Apocalypse. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

one of these is now missing because we bought it. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAeven the street art has an after-the-Revolution air downtown.

but anything is gorgeous after a morning in the gardens you see.

rose-tinted glasses – always.

*wavingfromlosangeles*

how was your friday?

plans for the weekend?

do. tell.

breakfast chez george with @missjulesberlin

darlings

@missjulesberlin was slightly surprised when we said the time we’d like to pick her up in the perfectly-silver-Prius this morning.

das ist 7?

well, ok, we said – let’s make it 7.30AM –

ok……………

because we’re going to visit George for breakfast so we need to get there early (George gets up very Early to Write).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and then she smiled and was reassured – a breakfast encounter is always delicious.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and we had also made a Plan with George to do a little cinematic-moment-about-his-books (his own books that he writes as well as the ones he owns).OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

doesn’t Spengler always remind you of the Waugh (that would be Evelyn) quote?

so I packed up all my clothes and two or three solemn books, such as Spengler’s Decline of the West, and a great many drawing materials, for two of the many unfulfilled resolutions which I made about this trip were that I was going to do some serious reading and drawing. Then I got into an aeroplane and went to Paris, where I spent the night with some kind, generous, and wholly delightful Americans.
when the going was good

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

we   a d o r e   Mary Wesley and Plum Wodehouse too. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

as well as naughty Truman and earnestly-earnest Ish.

it was a Lovely Morning.

and yes, we did make a little movie.

you are so Terribly Kind to ask *MGMsmiletocamera*

library book sale, roses, chandelier – and a gift wrap lesson from @yolksilverlake

darlings

we’re Exhausted (in a very good way).

we drove…….*looksvaguelyintothemiddledistance*…….well, a long way, anyway

and there were lovely things to see, as one might expect.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

a carousel (or as the Americans call them – a Merry-Go-Round) and one of those whirly-fans.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

an Italian baroqueness of a chandelier – we adore a chandelier – at Victori Ana (read it quickly, it took us a few moments) in Montrose (no website! if you want to visit here’s the RL address:

2311 Honolulu Ave, Montrose, CA

an exceedingly Pretty “home accents” shop with french soaps, scented candles and decorative place settings – we’re going to try and persuade george to come with us in November – they take a week – and three members of staff – to Decorate For The Holidays – we received a personal invite (you’re so clever, yes, the chandelier-gazing did it, darlings). OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

we popped in to the friends-of-littlerock-library book sale (ok, we drove 100 miles seduced by the concept of driving on pearblossom highway – not a pear or a blossom for miles until we saw these gorgeous blowsy roses in a jam jar). OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAan Amusing Amount of Georgette Heyer for sale (somebody clearly just went cold turkey in littlerock – or received an e-reading-digital-device for their Birthday).

talking of home accents shops (which we were a few moments ago – the caption with the chandelier if you missed it) – we’ve Always been Impressed by how Nicely they wrap everything at Yolk in silver lake.

so we decided to ask for a Demo.

yes, we filmed it.

come on.

you Knew we would.

impressive, right?

and the whole alternative nail polish shades?

Very Big in Los Angeles right now.

*ironiclooktocamera*

that *might* well be the first time we’ve ever mentioned Nail Polish here.

fancy that.
