eiderdown heaven with edna ferber (in book form) and a burst of evening birdsong

we felt a little under-the-weatherness creeping or rather Descending upon us.

many have been ill (around here and, we hear, in Other parts of the world) so we Knew it might arrive at teamgloria towers – actually, it hasn’t quite Yet – but that’s because, after our Very Early appointment across town this morning, we have spent the Rest Of The Day In Bed. eiderdownheaven

we did write the book about returning to the boudoir to rest…….after. all.

so we took our own advice (not Always a good concept but today, an excellent one).

luckily we had Edna Ferber for company.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAonly in book form, although it might have been fun to let her have the other set of pillows as we both read into the afternoon, drowsing gently to BBC (*doffs_cap*) Radio 4 (rather good serial of Miss Austen’s earlier works around tea-time).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAMs. Ferber had Such a good Attitude to life:OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAand there it IS that lovely phrase: “eiderdown heaven”OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAhow we long for a house with weekend guests and soaps that match the towels.

we used to have one (not a house but an apartment) – with four bedrooms if you can believe that – and a Terrace and dinner parties and – well – that’s for Another Time (or a novel, probably safest, darlings).

now that the sun has gone down (and a vast FULL MOON arisen in the night sky), we feel a lot better.

especially because a (Bright, no doubt) Young Thing said she picked up the book and felt better (after some tears which are to be expected if one is also on medical leave, as young Harriet was).

harrietmost amusing to find out that who-we-are-in-RL knows her boss (the Editor in Chief and terribly smart Lady of a slightly Saucy magazine for young women) who hasn’t (until now) read the book herself.

but is going to do so now.

and has said so publicly. Screen Shot 2014-03-15 at 8.24.57 PMthat’s great.

wonder how many books have been bought by lovely people and Taken Home to be enjoyed in the quiet surroundings of their own boudoir?

sightingduomomilanoa copy was spotted at the Duomo in Milan courtesy of the Very Chic Elisabetta Ferrari (yes, the one that writes for Vogue Italia)

sightingfreebirdbureauthe book took a nap after arriving in Hamburg and met a kitten at Freebird Bureau

while catching a few california rays, closer to home (thanks to Kate for this one!)sightingKoreanAir

it needed all those cat naps because it had also taken a Very Long (14 hours?) flight from Washington to KOREA (the Southern part) with our good friend Seoul Flaneur sightinglanie

and here it is with Lanie Denslow’s own book (which is a highly recommended read if you are in International Business and we know that many of you Are these days).

yesterday was also a lovely day – and a very long one – and coincidentally – involved an actual In Person Breakfast with the aforementioned kind Ms. Denslow herself.

we set off (by car, but wouldn’t it be lovely one day by Carriage?)OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

the sky was an incredibly uplifting sight.

we had breakfast at a Quirky HotelOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAwe then decided to take a walk (always frowned upon by uniformed Officials in Los Angeles but we throw caution to the wind as you know)OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAbecause it’s virtually impossible to take photographs of roses by the kerbside from a speeding (not that fast but sometimes tis true) car.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAor interesting Scaffolding and posters and nice vehicles unless one is walking and Looking (the looking bit is extremely vital) OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAso there you have it.

well, there was another bit that we can’t really talk about but it was a Chance encounter with someone of very advanced age who also, like us, grew up in another Land, and happened to be downtown yesterday and after we had waited (in the shade) for a little vegetarian rice bowl (jolly good) at the Thai food trucks by the Department of Water and Power (a nicer setting than one might expect) we sat and ate our lunch with him and Listened because sometimes that’s the nicest thing to do on a sunny afternoon in downtown los angeles.

do you know the other nicest thing to do on an early evening-time-in-southern-california during mid-March?

listen to birdsong.

and, due to the magic of digital devices and uploading and inter-titles and a bit of shaky camerawork – you Can Too.

oh you’re Most welcome!

all you need is love and someone to help one through the bureaucracy of small business administration.

a full day.

and before we start we have a Tiny Confession.

while we might be Rather Forthcoming (here) with you……

…….who-we-are-in-RL is, how can we put this, Terribly Shy.

so You know all about the book and the exhibition and the Plans and the dreams and the Hopes but, in RL, she is very Modest and, well, hasn’t told that many people about Any of it.

you might ask….

there’s Tall Poppy Syndrome (do you know it?)

and there’s jealousy and incredulity and but-you-had-a-Proper-Job-are-you-insane?

not to mention – (gulp) – Others’ expectations (which they do hate to have shattered once one is In A Category in their minds).

so while You know all about everything (pretty much – *winktocamera*) the Outside World well, doesn’t.

so when she went to a gathering at a lovely friend’s house last night where Several were well-met-by-low-lamplight and someone said:

it’s so good to see you back!

and someone else said:

why did you leave NYC? did you get a job back here?

and she said something cute (and really quite disingenuous – we had to go and get a glass of water, no ice, from the kitchen in disgust) like:

just missed it here terribly

and adjusted the pashmina round her shoulders (the AC is sometimes built for men-who-work-out and she hasn’t Quite reached the age of hot flashes as yet…..) and did a tight little smile.

that did it.

when the Question came up again, we prodded her Hard and suddenly she started to cry (softly – it was actually pretty, not the running-nose-variety) and Told All – the book deal the exhibition, the literary agent and everything

writing and taking photographs was all I ever wanted to do.

it was very touching.

we were Rather Moved actually.

and everyone was shocked.

but Ever So Nice afterwards.

so that’s that.

everyone knows.

well not Everyone but more than before, put it that way.

it was such an emotional Freeing (as the Americans might call it) Moment that we took a long stroll back to teamgloria towers and saw lovely things at l’heure bleu and stopped outside several houses to admire the night blooming jasmine and, at one apartment building, when someone was playing Gershwin late into the night, we sat on the wall and just felt full.

have you had that feeling recently?

so back to what we Wanted to write about now that’s out of the way.

actually that’s NOT what we wanted to write about but we’ve found the Magic of Putting Things Here and then they sort of sort themselves out (or people walk up to us and say “this is how you do that” which is delicious and Most Helpful).

so – having a registered S Corp in NYC (teamgloria, inc) but not Living in NYC (anymore) – and wanting to Deposit one’s Advance Check/cheque (GLORIAous abundance) into a bank account but not having (yet, yet) a business license for California and taking the Check back to Manhattan but the Bank can’t seem to open the Account (grrrrr) due to location issues but the California branch won’t do it because the Business is Registered in NYC – arghhhhh.

(said in a small voice).

here’s what we’ve done –

a. told the bank we’ll take our (vast, one hopes, at some point) business ELSEWHERE if they don’t do it with the Confirmation of Incorporation Letter and 2 x tax returns filed and paid (squire)

b. made an appointment at the local “small business administration” to get Help With Forms (said vaguely and rather apprehensively because it All Costs Money).

you are lovely for listening to all that.

so we Dealt with that frustration while having a lovely day, actually.

we got up Awfully Early for a breakfast downtown with the lovely Lanie DenslowOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

then we drove to silver lake to have a Photography Lighting Lesson with the gifted (and also lovely) Reuben ReynosoOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

who let us take his portrait too (this is his arm).

and this is Reuben.

and then there was More Driving and some more frustration regarding Administration matters and not a lot of work was done and we got a Blinding Headache and so did what we always do in this circumstances (well, not always, but Often).

we took the rest of the day off – resolved to work this evening (like now)

and went to the movies (because we adore the work of director Susanne Bier).

this is the Japanese official site (always Fascinating to see how different movies are presented to Different cultures and they have the Trailer) and this is the Danish site on that-strange-international-book-of-everyone-but-us.

Love-Is-All-You-Need-poster-03 love_is_all_you_need-1

we felt So Much Better after the movies (we always do).

Pierce Brosnan is splendid and Nobody wears a blue shirt with such a good effect on the Irish eyes – all brooding and broken and trying-hard but needs-love.

Do see it.

it’s Very moving – there’s illness and redemption and doing-up-a-villa-in-Italy (what’s not to love there) and a wedding-being-planned and stolen kisses and buying pretty dresses and balconies and gazing into the blue azure beyond.

we sobbed.

and not just because of the small business administration snafu with the Bank.

grazie. prego. and other words we used today.

there were Many Meetings today.

and a tiny bit of Italian spoken, by us, (the Italians spoke a Lot of it and all with fantastic hand gestures and a lot of thoughtful lips pursed as they stirred crunchy brown sugar into their piccolo espresso.)

but – this being Italy – there was also a Lunch.

which is ever such a delicious (literally) way to do business.

Hotel Principe Di Savoia Milano is beyond divine.

Our trip is done.

There’s a Large pot of Tea in front of us.

And a flashing ever-present-red-light on the blackberry.

Perhaps a small walk into dusk over Milano.

And an Early Night.

For tomorrow we return, swathed in a black cashmere pashmina, our bags nestled in the back of a towncar, en route to Another Airport.

For now – grazie, Milano.

prego, signora

says Milano.

In our head, at least.

Italy? Or heaven?

Sunset over Milan as we landed from Paris (god, doesn’t that make the Most Delicious Sentence, darlings?)

dear god(s).

did we land in Italy……….

Or Heaven?

To quote Julie Andrews (as Maria)

Nothing comes from nothing
Nothing ever could
So somewhere in my youth or childhood
I must have done something good

It’s going to be So Hard to leave this room tomorrow…….

But we just swam (agonizingly healthy, right?)

Landed at linate airport at 19:45. A smooth Italian sentence at the smooth Italian driver and we sped off towards Town.

An hour later we were swimming lengths in the pool on the 10th floor.

just teamgloria.

The driver had other things to do.

we are going to relish this beauty…

A tiny bit breathless.

To be honest.

We feel faint around such deliciousness as you know….

corporate drag

send soothing thoughts of a whimsical picnic on a hillside in kent, a walk through bluebell wood, sussex, a long seductive lunch on a penthouse terrace in portofino…………….for today we are heading into a two day conference type affair (and one evening for an official dinner) in corporate drag (suits-with-irony – well, actually team gloria is still in dr martens but the less frightening mary-janes version for whimsy with the pearls)

today team gloria is brought to you with the fierce attitude of eleanora di toledo (circa early 1500s).

because we need all the glorious female spirit we can draw on (tobias is now almost completely strangling our thyroid with his tumor-ness and we are utterly, completely, wiped out and emotional)

oh dear.

onward and upward with blackberry torch aloft.

send those good thoughts, darlings – we need them.

and you.
