an ocean, a cashmere blanket and light refracted through trees.

happy monday!

is that an oxymoron for you? or are you happy to be Back in the general Swing of things?

we have been thinking about Needs (as opposed to desires) today.

not all day.

but, you know, intermittently.

de temps en temps as they might say in la belle france.

Mr. Einstein (didn’t see that coming did you?) said that a (wo)man just needed the following to be completely at ease and inside the comfort-ness-of-life:

a table, a chair, a bowl of fruit and a violin; what else does a man need to be happy?

it’s the Violin that really makes that sentence sing, doesn’t it?

well, let’s see:

we have a (lovely farmhouse) table, two chairs (and a sofa and a bench that matches the lovely farmhouse table), no fruit in a bowl today (we’ve eaten the fruit up before we go on our Trip To Europe) and, nope, oh that is disappointing, no actual Violin.

oh – WAIT!

we *do* have a virtual violin – there are, in fact, plenty on mr. soundcloud.

then we started to think (not always a good idea but fine as the sun is going down) – what’s our Equivalent of Mr. Einstein’s small yet beautiful requirements?

let’s see….

quiet contemplation and supper with friends. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

visiting splendid ladies in the canyon who have Scavullo coffee table books and soft cashmere blankets and feeling useful and inspired. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

surrounded by tea lights and soft inspirational pictures in wooden frames.

pulling over on the side of the road and standing on the cliffs above the ocean and feeling the breeze ripple through the (freshly bobbed) hair.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAbreathing deep in beverly hills as the road winds through the verdant streets.

and taking to the o p e n r o a d with the windows rolled down while listening to Ms. J. Joplin.

that’s it.

the open road, music, cashmere blankets, tea lights, ocean breezes and a regular dose of Doris Day movies, of course.

what’s your list?

do. tell.

dreaming of tulle and hat boxes at The Wish List 98.9 miles south of L.A

we emerged sleepily onto the back streets and then (pepped up by the dark embrace of caffeine) roared onto the freeways and Headed South.

despite leaving *almost* at Dawn the traffic was unbearable so we told the lady-voiced-global-positioning-system to DETOUR! and she came up with a much better route that was very long and winding and……OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

took in many trees……OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and sunlight kisses through branches and ground cover of delicate varying shades of pink floral blooms…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and a tiny train station with just one platform and a sneak peek of the OCEAN beyond…..OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and the MOST DELICIOUS vintage shop in a tiny bungalow called The Wish List.

here’s the address in case you happened to be in the locale one fine day.

2945 Madison St
(between Carlsbad Village Dr & Grand Ave)
Carlsbad, CA 92008

and they even have a page on that chap Mark’s hangout:

hat boxes and over-stuffed drawers with family wedding photographs and the sort of cases that Laura Ingalls Wilder probably had when she left Ma and Pa and went off to be a young teacher and had just a few changes of clothes (which she had sewed herself having bought the materials from that general store with the daughter with the unfeasibly bouncy ringlets)OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

the owner of this treasure trove of beauteousness is called Kristin and we had a few moments so we stopped and had a little reverie at her story (everyone has a good story if you only ask and then put on your nice listening face and the magic tumbles into your head and stays there all happy it has found a new home) – there was a tale of Nashville and Another store that was there and then coming back to the place she was from – which is here – 98.1 miles south of los angeles in a hamlet called Carlsbad – and creating a place that looks awfully like Andie’s bedroom in Pretty in Pink. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and there was even a cat (we think her name was Olive). OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and signs and aprons and a general deliciousness of “Enter Here!”OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and words to stop and make you think. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

it reminded us of Albert Camus.

(you didn’t see that coming did you?)

“In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer. And that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there’s something stronger – something better, pushing right back.”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAand then, later on – after we had tagged along behind who-we-are-in-RL as she did her Consulting Work and sat with a pen and made notes and some (rather insightful) suggestions and there was laughing and new people and a coffee break and meeting engineers and lists and much paper inside manilla folders – it was time to go – and we took a walk to stretch our legs and eat a little supper and have a most glorious foot massage and generally avoid the traffic on the way back to L.A, leaving after dark – and suddenly, out of the darkness, we heard a WOOT WOOT! and it was the Pacific Surfliner Train rushing onwards and further up the Coast.

it was a lovely moment.

so we waited a while to let the feelings sink just beneath the surface and rest awhile before we got in the perfectly silver Prius and drove allthewayhometolosangeles.

happy friday.

happy friday.

we are Too Too Tired to Type – and we are Expected somewhere with our work-face on in an hour or so – but we have returned to Los Angeles and had a Most Delicious time south of Oceanside and then North of Malibu (yes, it was a LONG drive home) where we were given hot mint tea to sip and a view of the sunset for the second day in a row but 100 miles in the Opposite Direction.

but life is good.

delicious, in fact.

this was the cloudy view Very Early yesterday morning (we awoke at 5.45 and headed out in the car shortly after dawn) as we took a constitutional on the Beach before we needed to be Smart and Alert to support who-we-are-in-RL during her (most interesting) Day…….

and then – MANY hours later – we drove back up to Los Angeles and across to Malibu for an evening’s engagement up high in the Canyons (not the Joni Mitchell Canyon) but another one that climbs and climbs and climbs up to a Very High Elevation *vaguelooktocamera*)9b408fda00ac11e3904e22000a1f928e_7

thankfully there was hot mint tea and friendly faces (not shown) at the top and we stayed until nightfall making it very carefully down the Canyon again feeling kind and happy and rather sleepy so we stopped in at a late night cafe in pacific palisades and had a little snack to make sure we got home safely.

and now it’s friday.

isn’t that splendid?

what will You be doing first thing Saturday morning?

visual descriptions most welcome (if they’re pretty – you know we like pretty visuals).

well hello, saturday.

it is really Le Weekend?

how glorious.

we are Ever so exhausted by this wonderful week just gone by – and now we must rest.

after we show you a few pictures (and thank you so much for dropping by en route to the kitchen to make tea and the bookcase in the hall to select a new novel to read – what did you decide on in the end?)

our new doctors’ office (we use the punctuation correctly – tis a Group Practice – which always sounds like Extra Netball on Wednesdays after Prep) has a rather subtle Scandi-Style (as the British call it – we’ve been reading magazines from across the Pond – such fun).

and we now have the strange experience of two of our three doctors here in L.A being Younger Than who-we-are-in-RL (staying perpetually 28 years old chez teamgloria darlings – like so many online, of course).

and when one doctor admired our notes (medical ones) and we Talked Through Everything that Happened and they tapped our chest and listened quietly through the Listening Instruments we said:

well, at least we got a nice scar – and a book deal – out of it.

and they just looked mildly curious and Moved Right On to the next question.

oh. right.

we thought, checking our reflection in the reflective surfaces of the instrument panel.

not an unusual occurrence here in L.A – the book deal ;-)

or maybe a book deal doesn’t mean very much in the Land of the Screen of Silver.

anyway, she was perfectly lovely (yes, a lady doctor, how Modern as William would say).

and then there was lovely Driving (doesn’t this look like the opening title Sequence for LA Law?OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and earlier in the day, judging by the Light here, perhaps we could have re-jigged the order here but we’re very tired so just, well, can’t today – forgive? we had a couple of Very Important conference calls (doesn’t everybody do these in the comfort of one’s Boudoir?)

and then a bit later (after the Doctor) we stopped by a cafe that has vintage Posters (and this reminded us of reading about JustAddAttitude’s vintage poster spotting in the fair Isle)OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and Gitanes always remind us of Richard Bohringer.

Because we kept him in smokes* during the shooting of a certain movie at a wonderful Film Studio outside London.

*we no longer smoke, children – this was a hard Habit to break – but we did – many moons ago – and anyway have-you-seen-the-price-of-cigarettes-these-days?! OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

ah – the slippery sandy oily teenage summer memories of the left – and the checking-ones-sunburn-under-a-cafe-umbrella in Estoril, Portugal sipping a Perrier and reading a scurrilous novel. #happydaysOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

then it was time to drive again (can you spot the seagull posing like a statue on the Left?)OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

but only after we browsed a little in this new shop for fashionable children (yes, 3/4 size furniture – including the chandeliers – we adore a chandelier) – actually seriously tempted by a few pieces – we going to ask who-we-are-in-RL to set aside some of the cash coming in from work to do a little shopping before Thanksgiving!OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

then there was a peach sunset. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAand a quiet cup of mint tea with @tjenamoss.

it’s a Swedish word and someone from NYC who now lives in Sweden has a nice explanation here.

that was a whirlwind of thoughts and memories in one day – from Estoril to Elstree and sweden to santa monica and all the way over to silver lake and back.

and now we rest.

the coffee is ready.

and we’re almost finished reading Miss Pym.

have a beautiful saturday, darlings.

you deserve it.

@missjulesberlin in #hollywood, darlings.

guess who came to town!

it was in the Title.

yes! – – – – – –  > missjulesberlin

it was a lovely day.

we drove from the hollywood hills to silver lake.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

yes. this is silver lake. and we went to visit @tjenamoss at Yolk!

and past the hollywood studios. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

warner bros, disney and paramount and universal (but only from the freeway)OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and miss jules took lots of pictures.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and we went to admire the art at LacmaOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and she gave us beautiful gifts from berlinOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAas did another glorious person in BERLIN (who had sent the small package of wonderful pieces with miss jules herself! thank you!)

and – wait……

why, yes.

we DID make a little movie of today.

you are Most Kind.

we adore working with Professionals.

morning music.

we’ve been Contemplating the View as we drive around Los Angeles par nuit (not all Nuit, just en route to home last night) and thinking about which music really befits it.

first, the view.

hollywoodthis is driving east through Hollywood.

and then this is the first choice of music:

or perhaps this?

another View? one from an earlier twilight.

and This was our final choice of music…….#weAdoreBlossomDearie

don’t you?

whistle a happy tune. Or some other psychological trickery that works.

Make believe you’re brave
And the trick will take you far
You may be as brave
As you make believe you are

as much as we adore the tinklingly-beautiful-voice and correct pronunciation of Marni Nixon aka voice-of-Deborah Kerr, we have to say THIS is our completely favo(u)rite version.

or maybe this one……(although we’re not sure about the peach macintosh)

we digress.

what do you do, darlings, when you’re afraid?

Screen shot 2013-02-11 at 7.23.18 AM

do you watch The Muppet Show?

(did we ever tell you that every time we drive up – or down – La Brea – we wave to Kermit?)

do you settle down against the back cushions of the couch and watch a Doris Day and Mr. Hudson movie?

do you admire the natural beauty of the mountains while driving-to-sunday-lunch in the Valley beyond the Valley?

do you go for a long walk at twilight and take photographs of twinkling nights like pearls between buildings softly settling down into the evening light?

perhaps you wait for dawn to arrive, poised with grown-up camera and just sit quietly at the end of the bed and take deep breaths and know that everything will be ok.

do you buy yourself white roses and polish up a small silver cup – just like you admired in a magazine years ago and create a still-life?

do you take a nap under cool sheets and warm comforters/duvets and listen to the birds sing outside?OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

do you get in the car and drive-drive-drive while listening to the radio and sing along to all the bits you know from sappy-call-in-love-songs-shows?OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

do you go and sit by the Ocean and let the sound of the crashing surf block out the cRAzy thoughts?OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

do you ask people (nicely) to help with stuff or maybe just listen?

do you take a swim and let the sunshine tickle the back of your neck?OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Make believe you’re brave
And the trick will take you far
You may be as brave
As you make believe you are

we actually don’t whistle very well.

and yet we do Try.

the rest of the psychological trickery we are Very good at ;-)

what do You do?

do. tell.

a day in Portugal.

a day of driving, dogs (both excited and dozing in equal measure), lunch, Family of Origin (both heart-warming and full of sadness in equal parts), British television via satellite and excellent supper on-a-tray and more driving and much of it photographed to share with You.

We’ve always known a blog helps.

Even when we can’t write in Great Detail.

But sometimes just knowing that many of you walked us through you-know-what. Both those of you who know us in RL and those of you who only know us Here (and goodness knows we are More us here than Out There it feels). The thing is, we couldn’t tell them about Tobias the tumor story while it was happening. For many reasons. Some were good reasons (how do you tell your parents you are waiting to see if you have cancer?). Others were not necessarily good but necessary reasons (not everyone can Cope when stuff is not happening to them but to others and they are frightened and perhaps ill equipped). And god knows they have Their Own Issues (there are many reasons we find it Helpful to Have. A. Therapist, darlings).

What we are trying to say is that today was easier because we knew you’d be there at the end of it.

Thank you.

Hope you like the photographs.

It made today more beautiful looking for beauty to share here later.

A couple of times we almost let the name gloria slip ;)

In time, we guess, we will tell.

And if you’re reading this then – we did the best we could at the time.

Hollywood: backlots, freeways and international deals

a strange yet beautiful day.

started early (still on east coast time) with a breakfast meeting and some excellent inked types in black smoking nearby to provide Hollywood context of the youth-gone-wrong-jamesDean style.

we didn’t take their picture.

Best left to your (vivid) imagination.

But we Do adore context.

Especially when on a backlot.

Isn’t Hollywood delicious in sepia?

The 101 looks divine in sepia too.

More context.

More glam.

And then an odd business meeting on the Other side of town……can’t share any details, of course, but there was a Very Hollywood feel to the surroundings and the cast and the attitude.

Then teamgloria said (quietly yet with authority):

oh. Really? That wasn’t our experience – in china.

And the table went quiet (the people around the table, that is, the table was not participating at all).

We did enjoy it.

Nothing like a few hours driving in the sepia-tinted sunshine to really lift the spirits and the level of sassy repartee ;)

How was your day?
