dreaming of tulle and hat boxes at The Wish List 98.9 miles south of L.A

darlings

we emerged sleepily onto the back streets and then (pepped up by the dark embrace of caffeine) roared onto the freeways and Headed South.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

despite leaving *almost* at Dawn the traffic was unbearable so we told the lady-voiced-global-positioning-system to DETOUR! and she came up with a much better route that was very long and winding and……OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

took in many trees……OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and sunlight kisses through branches and ground cover of delicate varying shades of pink floral blooms…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and a tiny train station with just one platform and a sneak peek of the OCEAN beyond…..OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and the MOST DELICIOUS vintage shop in a tiny bungalow called The Wish List.

here’s the address in case you happened to be in the locale one fine day.

2945 Madison St
(between Carlsbad Village Dr & Grand Ave)
Carlsbad, CA 92008

and they even have a page on that chap Mark’s hangout: https://www.facebook.com/wishlist.carlsbad

treasures galore!OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

hat boxes and over-stuffed drawers with family wedding photographs and the sort of cases that Laura Ingalls Wilder probably had when she left Ma and Pa and went off to be a young teacher and had just a few changes of clothes (which she had sewed herself having bought the materials from that general store with the daughter with the unfeasibly bouncy ringlets)OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

the owner of this treasure trove of beauteousness is called Kristin and we had a few moments so we stopped and had a little reverie at her story (everyone has a good story if you only ask and then put on your nice listening face and the magic tumbles into your head and stays there all happy it has found a new home) – there was a tale of Nashville and Another store that was there and then coming back to the place she was from – which is here – 98.1 miles south of los angeles in a hamlet called Carlsbad – and creating a place that looks awfully like Andie’s bedroom in Pretty in Pink. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and there was even a cat (we think her name was Olive). OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and signs and aprons and a general deliciousness of “Enter Here!”OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and words to stop and make you think. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

it reminded us of Albert Camus.

(you didn’t see that coming did you?)

“In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer. And that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there’s something stronger – something better, pushing right back.”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAand then, later on – after we had tagged along behind who-we-are-in-RL as she did her Consulting Work and sat with a pen and made notes and some (rather insightful) suggestions and there was laughing and new people and a coffee break and meeting engineers and lists and much paper inside manilla folders – it was time to go – and we took a walk to stretch our legs and eat a little supper and have a most glorious foot massage and generally avoid the traffic on the way back to L.A, leaving after dark – and suddenly, out of the darkness, we heard a WOOT WOOT! and it was the Pacific Surfliner Train rushing onwards and further up the Coast.

it was a lovely moment.

so we waited a while to let the feelings sink just beneath the surface and rest awhile before we got in the perfectly silver Prius and drove allthewayhometolosangeles.

hello, carlsbad: land of mystical dragon shops and movies nights at the fountain

darlings

we’re in Carlsbad!

who-we-are-in-RL is doing some Consulting nearby tomorrow and the Traffic is INSANE in the mornings from L.A so we packed up the car…….

after a leisurely morning – – – 25da5ae40da111e38d6622000a1fbc43_7and headed South – pausing at a few stops along the way………

stopping at Dana Point for lunch in the harbo(u)r. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and taking a long walk around the harbo(u)r walls admiring the boats (a surprising number of the boats are called Princess Di or Lady Di so we’re assuming a fairly healthy number of Anglophiles – or perhaps Royal Followers)OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

or rich Queens (always a good sign when the local shop that sells Perrier has a chandelier).

after lunch we got back in the Perfectly (Silver) Prius and continued on the road, listening mostly to the Tunes of our Youth (and yes, singing most happily down Highway 1)

until we reached Carlsbad.

we did this before nightfall but didn’t get a chance to take pictures until after dark – people to see and so on and so forth (we forgot that the nights are drawing in and sunset was Earlier than the last time we were south of the Orange Curtain).
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Carlsbad is adorable.

it is, as you probably already know, named after the Jewel of the West Bohemian Spa Triangle. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

but we were more interested in the strange and mystical dragon shops (twas closed but next time, darlings)OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and much frivolity coming out of the restaurants along the twinkle-lined streets and an enticing view of a forthcoming music festival

*lookspotentlytocamera* we love music (and musicians). OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

sadly we missed The Princess Bride which was playing by the Fountain in the village (we ADORE that movie).

and now we must s l e e p………a busy day ahead tomorrow.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

goodnight darlings.

have you ever been to carlsbad?

any recommendations for a place to sip tea late afternoon?

we’ll ask around.

but we thought we’d also ask You.

*winningsmile*

happy friday.

darlings

happy friday.

we are Too Too Tired to Type – and we are Expected somewhere with our work-face on in an hour or so – but we have returned to Los Angeles and had a Most Delicious time south of Oceanside and then North of Malibu (yes, it was a LONG drive home) where we were given hot mint tea to sip and a view of the sunset for the second day in a row but 100 miles in the Opposite Direction.

but life is good.

delicious, in fact.

this was the cloudy view Very Early yesterday morning (we awoke at 5.45 and headed out in the car shortly after dawn) as we took a constitutional on the Beach before we needed to be Smart and Alert to support who-we-are-in-RL during her (most interesting) Day…….

8e9e2d6c009511e392b622000a1fb73b_7

and then – MANY hours later – we drove back up to Los Angeles and across to Malibu for an evening’s engagement up high in the Canyons (not the Joni Mitchell Canyon) but another one that climbs and climbs and climbs up to a Very High Elevation *vaguelooktocamera*)9b408fda00ac11e3904e22000a1f928e_7

thankfully there was hot mint tea and friendly faces (not shown) at the top and we stayed until nightfall making it very carefully down the Canyon again feeling kind and happy and rather sleepy so we stopped in at a late night cafe in pacific palisades and had a little snack to make sure we got home safely.

and now it’s friday.

isn’t that splendid?

what will You be doing first thing Saturday morning?

visual descriptions most welcome (if they’re pretty – you know we like pretty visuals).

the day we went to carlsbad – and back

darlings

who-we-are-in-RL was having a Very Important Business Meeting down in Carlsbad today (which is 100 miles drive south or 160.934 kilometres according to mr. google) and we BEGGED to be able to tag along because we wanted to Take The Long Way Home via what are known as the “Beach Communities” (see map).

she said yes but as long as we kept out of the way.

*lookstocamera*

which we Did (sort of) until someone lovely at the meeting happened to mention the phrase (is it a phrase or just a word? or is it A Movement? discuss:) “teamgloria” and that they’d visited us Here and it all became rather delicious and we felt Most Involved (so much fun).

after that we kept a Low Profile and just snapped away on the grown-up-camera which we view as the modern version of a Brownie camera (which was our first camera many years ago – an aged relative passed it on to us and it took gorgeous film-based-shots).

would you like to see them?

you are lovely.

thank you.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAit was indeed the Very Long Way home – but most often that’s quite the nicest way to get anywhere – taking time, looking around, snapping pictures, smiling at the surfers waiting-for-a-wave, looking out to the horizon, feeling all-happy-and-freckly and ALIVE.
