farewell, cape town and thank you @thebookmarks @nikkicockcroft @FNBSA

we fly in just a few hours……the black town car will arrive and we shall slip into the back with our sadness hid behind dark glasses for this has been a tremendous trip, we have learned much and met some Superb examples of human people including the Deeply Impressive and glorious Ms. Cockcroft to whom we give a most heartfelt thanks for bringing us to South Africa (and to our delightful sponsor FNB as well a merry wave)

and attended a small village fete in the sort of church hall that one would have had a tap dance recital circa 1953. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

with a message close to our own heart. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

ah, memories of Kent for the Colonial expat ;-)

a deep reverence for Mr. Gandhi at the Mount Nelson.

for a breakfast this morning with two very sophisticated business women (thank you dears!)OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAand now we must take our leave of fair Cape Town.

see you in Whitstable (if we locate a US to UK charger so our devices all work that is – which May not be possible – so radio silence is entirely likely until Tuesday, darlings – EEK!)

here goes………flight 7 of 10……and the l o n g journey back to Los Angeles.

isn’t life glorious?

glorious cape town and the brilliance of @theBookmarks

a lovely, lovely, time in cape town – the work bit is (almost) over so we’ve let who-we-are-in-RL have a sleep because she did Very Well giving speeches, judging (in a good way) and everything these past few days….(and the Ladies Brunch was very moving, so glad we were asked to participate).

Screen Shot 2013-11-14 at 2.59.02 PM Screen Shot 2013-11-14 at 2.59.24 PM Screen Shot 2013-11-14 at 2.59.35 PM Screen Shot 2013-11-14 at 3.14.25 PM Screen Shot 2013-11-14 at 3.14.35 PM Screen Shot 2013-11-14 at 3.14.54 PM

so we took the grown-up camera and headed out into Cape Town (which is an Extremely Chilled of a Place to be) and enjoyed the scent of orange blossom, jasmine and some identified smokey smell which could well be the braai (bar-b-que, darlings).

this is where we’re staying (right? DIVINE!). OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

there’s nothing like a Veranda to feel drifty and pretty over breakfast coffee occasions. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

now this is Very Important – it’s the Bookery and it does really good things here in South Africa and yes, we stopped by and had a chat and a think about how to write about them perhaps for a publication…. *putsthinkingfaceon*OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

because books are Crucial to small (and bigger) people. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

the Book Lounge is nearby and we bought a slim volume of fiction (more on that later) and enjoyed a small conversation with the excellent sales staff. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

this is the outside of the Book Lounge.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and these are photographs we took this morning before it got hot (because, of course, this is Summer below the Equator – isn’t that glorious?)OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAand now we rest a little while before getting ready for the Bookmarks party which we’ve heard is Deeply glamorous (a tiny bit debauched but we’ll have escaped in an Uber long before t h a t, love ;-)

sunday in cape town.

a lovely sunday in cape town – and now we fly to Johannesburg! (flight 5 of 10!) in a few hours……see you in Another South African City shortly(ish).

we adore a chandelier!OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and an earthenware plant pot. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

the old brewery where a lot of digital and film companies now live is fabulously decadently worn….OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

from 1901 no less. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and some modern additions. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

lovely light inside. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and a most heart-warming welcome from the host agency to us Judges (in a good way)OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

stylish chairs. Very Digital. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and then to the V&A waterfront for a fish supper. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and a curious sight of red ballooooooooons….OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

flying free (symbolic gesture? it did feel so, but we didn’t stop to ask on this occasion – it seemed intrusive for some reason so we just smiled and watched and snapped a shot).

although yes, we, too, though of Nena.

and gave deep pause and respect. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAas the twilight drew in (and who doesn’t love a Twilight – particularly over a mountain top)?

we must pack (again) for the black town car awaits after breakfast.

judging. in a good way.

while who-we-are-in-RL is judging (in a good way, because The Bookmarks national digital awards of SOUTH AFRICA asked specifically if she would, you see) we’ve met some Fascinating People and made a few Tiny Alterations* to who-we-are-in-RL’s speech for Tuesday – in Johannesburg (hurrah! flight 5 of 10!) – as she’s giving a Workshop (most exciting) and nodded (sagely) as she was interviewed by the Media (yes, she wore pearls and we applied some helpful make-up solutions to counteract jet lag dark circles) and generally Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves taking pictures in this beautiful country.

take a look!

we do find twinkle lights just so soothing and, well, beautiful.

this is where we’ve been spending daylight hours doing the Judging for The Bookmarks – we don’t usually tell you where we are (specifically) but this is such an Interesting and groovy workplace (and you could easily find out online as they are a worthy sponsor of the Awards by providing us a space to Judge (in a good way)OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

as night fell over the mountain tops we took a few moments to feel at peace and tell the jet lag to bugger off (it was descending -fast- into the front cortex).

and then JT came to get us and we had a quiet lovely evening in Town (JT is worth mentioning, albeit under Initials only – a wondrous friend from NYC who just happens to have been living in South AFRICA and is about to leave but waited another week so we could spend time together – and he could pack properly as that takes a while when you move countries – and we should know, love ;-)OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

the sunlight is very harsh (in an exciting way) below the Equator *shivers* and deliciously warm.

what’s next?

a few more categories of judging…..

there’s also a Networking Ladies Brunch (definitely pearls and a Helpful Hopeful attitude for that one) when we get back to Cape Town (flight 6 of 10!) and then…..well…….who knows…..we’ve got a couple of people that we met before during our International Travels who just Happen to be in Johannesburg and we’ve heard that they’re around and we can sip tea and catch up.

isn’t life just GLORIAous?

what’s that, darlings?

you saw the star* on the (almost) throwaway line about us making Tiny Alterations on who-we-are-in-RL’s speech?

and were curious as to How?

please don’t tell her you’ve seen this….

Screen Shot 2013-11-10 at 12.05.55 PM Screen Shot 2013-11-10 at 12.06.31 PM

well, it just needed Our Flair – and there’s nothing to be Lost by using Stills from Hollywood movies starring Mr. Rock Hudson and the glorious Doris Day – right?

plus, did you see what her speech is called?

Screen Shot 2013-11-10 at 12.07.26 PMquelle subtle title ;-)

at least she mentioned Us.

or there’d be trouble.

it’s so big and exciting and brave and new and BOLD.

dawn over dubai and sunset over south africa.

we’re HERE!

it’s extraordinary being (back) here and every time one looks up there it is  – a bloody great Mountain (Table Mountain) in the middle of the City.

Screen Shot 2013-11-08 at 9.19.31 PM

now this was the view over DUBAI at 6AM this morning where we changed planes in the middle of a desert – which was glorious – but an airport that appeared to be slipped onto the sides of a vastness of a shopping mall (which was rather depressing).

and now here we are: latitude 33° 56′ S which means 33 degrees and 56 minutes from the EQUATOR *shivers* also known as Cape Town, South Africa.

isn’t it lovely?

take a look:

the twinkling lights….OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

the soft glow of a warm sub-equatorial eveningOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

slowly fading into pink then night fell.

as we took a post 16 hours of flying stroll around the Woodstock area we heard shouts of triumph and clapping and, well, we like both those sound effects (or FX as they call them in Hollywood), and so we walked towards the location of the aforementioned sounds and found a football (or soccer, depending on where You come from) match was taking place.

shyly (for we are in-RL) we took a seat amongst the spectators and started up a conversation and it was glorious because we felt Instantly at Home.

and now we must turn in and do a little work for that is Why we are Here.

most grateful we are too.

before we leave you, we would be remiss if we did not share a link to the History of Cape Town –  it is a fascinating account and yet, as you probably know, sadly much of it contains some truly awful historical (and not-so-historical) occasions and Attitudes.

which is why we felt grateful to have a moment of connection on a bench overlooking a football match as the twinkling lights flickered over the bay and the sunset blazed crimson behind table mountain.

these are the moments that make memories.
