talking to someone who understands

a little bit late for work so taking a cab up 8th so I can do the voluminous correspondence on email for the day job as we hurtle uptown.

just had breakfast with someone who had their own tumor (didn’t ask if she named it – not everyone gets that it helps me to do so ;) Bb was so kind and direct and full of useful insights into the process of what to do (and what NOT to do) when being invaded by a growth in one’s body that, quite frankly, one didn’t issue with an invitation to the team gloria party.

yeah. we get cross sometimes.

cross that something happened that is beyond our control.

because, when you get down to it – everything is beyond our control and for the first time ever, we get that it’s actually rather nice to say “sod it!” and let the whole bloody great weight slide off and dissolve like bubbles into the air.

sigh. feeling better now.

thanks for listening :)

About teamgloria

I used to make my living from writing. And then it all stopped and so I went and did something else, part of which entailed a whole new look from Brooks Brothers (it wasn’t really me, but it was necessary). But a decade later I started to write again (during nights and weekends and frustrated lunch-times and long haul business travel) and one of the things I wrote (or came to me – as I do believe in the whole Muse concept) was a character called Gloria. Gloria was a trainee angel and sat “up there” waiting for her first assignment. To occupy the hours she should have been studying humans and their foibles, she spent her time enjoying the new celestial movies-on-demand channel and became obsessed by Doris Day. So you can imagine the drama that unfolded when she came to Earth. Quite a shock to the system. But Gloria was determined to see Manhattan through the eyes of a vintage Doris Day movie and something magical started to happen – to me too. Because I started to do the same thing and life became easier (and then I got Tobias the tumor which changed the trajectory, for now). There are a lot of glorious people, places & things that help me get through my day – they make my life great – and so I call them “team gloria” (although they don’t usually know that). So I thought I’d start documenting them, and looking out for new people, places & things on a daily basis, and sharing them with you (whomever you are – do say hello. Oh, and tell me who your team gloria is :-)

  1. Developing a serious illness initiates you/me/us into another life altogether. People who are not in that life find it very hard to accept that we did nothing to ‘invite’ the illness into our lives. They want urgently, if not honorably, to reassure themselves that we could have, but inexplicably did not, warded it off somehow, so that they can tell themselves that they will certainly not be vulnerable to such a thing. It’s human, but it’s certainly not admirable. In the meantime, we show up for treatment, and put up with side effects that are often stronger than the main effects, and live anyhow. Hang in there, Gloria. We can’t have your back, but we can keep you company the meanwhile.
